Here's 10 minutes of *just* the standard zouk beat/percussion (no other instrumentals) for practicing Brazilian zouk. If you're looking for more "regular" practice music for Brazilian zouk, check out our list of recommendations here: https://amozouk.com/practice-music Special thanks to DJ Efosa (https://www.mixcloud.com/djeflosa/) to walking us through how to create this simple metronome beat!
Does your neck feel uncomfortable during (or after) you practice head movement? Do you feel like your neck muscles and shoulders seize up, and you wonder how other followers seem to keep things looking soft and effortless? Or are you on the other end of the spectrum and have some hypermobility and are worried about protecting your neck during head movement? One of the best things you can do for all of the above is *strengthening your deep neck flexors,* the muscles in the front of your neck that support the weight of your head when it falls backwards (which is the portion of head movement most followers find most challenging). Join professional contortionist and flexibility coach Dani for this 10-min follow-along conditioning routine to start building up the next strength to help better support your neck and head during head movement. By working on these drills 1-3 a week, you'll be building a stronger foundation for safer, and more comfortable head movement :) **** Want to learn imp

A “traveling tilted turn” refers to any turn where the follower’s upper body is tilted relative to their (vertical) axis of rotation (which is traveling down the line as they turn!). Note that the tilt is constant, meaning there is no head movement during the traveling turn (although it certainly can be added to become a traveling turn with head movement). Planada comes from the Portuguese word planar, meaning “to float/soar/glide.” A planada is a single-footed turn where the leader rotates the follower on a stationary axis, helping them effortlessly float or glide through the rotation, almost as if weightless! In Brazilian zouk, the “ioiô” (Portuguese for “yo-yo”) is characterized by the follower doing a traveling turn in towards the lead, then doing a traveling turn out in the other direction, just like a yo-yo unfurling then curling back up it’s string!
Upper back flexibility can be a big challenge for zouk dancers (and, frankly, any other dance that uses slinky movements like body rolls. Sensual bachata and pole dance - I'm looking at YOU!). A limited range of motion in the spine, especially when it comes to arching the upper back, can make movements like body rolls and head movement quite the challenge. Not to mention how our low back can get cranky if it spends all night compensating for lack of flexibility in our upper back... So here's a quick 15-minute follow-along routine you can do to work on your upper back flexibility. Soon you'll be cambre-ing from your upper back like a pro! Local GuideGoogleNew to dancing? Zouk dancer new to Minneapolis? You can count on the AmoZouk team to unlock your inner Brazilian Zouk dancer (or level it up!), and you'll have a blast while you're with them. They're a passionate bunch of dance teachers who pour their hearts and souls into thoughtful class planning, building a thriving community of dancers, and simply dancing for the love of it. As a fellow dancer from Chicago, I've watched from afar as their studio has grown from a fledgling space to a strong community -- with students going from zero experience to dancing confidently at socials when I last visited this weekend. If you're thinking about giving AmoZouk a try, this is your sign. You'll be in excellent hands.

GoogleAmoZouk is an outstanding zouk community! I attended a weekender there and it was so thoughtfully planned with well leveled workshops and a practice time with the artists. The organizers were supremely friendly the minute I stepped in the door and responsive to the needs of all the attendees. The Amo Zouk teachers prepared each and every one of their students well for the class topics of the weekender and social danced with everyone! I will definitely be back!

Local GuideGoogleAmoZouk is a welcoming environment for those who have little to no dance training and those who are well on their way with more experience! They offer quality instruction, break down the material, and are very invested in their community. The instructors are amazing people and the community that attends the classes is so kind and fun to be around. I would highly recommend AmoZouk if you are looking for fun and engaging instruction, quality friendships, and access to Zouk which is such an expansive dance form that I believe everyone should try! Local GuideGoogleAmoZouk is a refreshing dance studio to learn from. Large dancing space, wonderful instructors, and easy drop in format make learning Zouk enjoyable. The instructors are full of knowledge both in the style of dance but also in teaching dance, often giving you technique drills during warm up that I've started incorporating into the other dances I do (mainly salsa, bachata, and west coast swing). I LOVE that they hop into the class dance rotation so when you get to the instructor, you get personalized critiques on your following or leading abilities. The instructors also have a blog where they go over techniques, drills, and ways to practice on your own or to stay safe during dancing! Thank you to AmoZouk for making learning to dance so fun!

GoogleThe instructors at AmoZouk foster a welcoming environment and are genuinely invested in each student's development. They rotate with students during class to ensure everyone grasps the technique. I also appreciate the free 45-minute social dance after class, which is key to my growth as a dancer. Having studied various Latin styles, I find that dancing with different partners in a social environment is essential for any dancer looking to improve their skills.

GoogleI highly recommend AmoZouk if you’re interested in learning Brazilian Zouk! The four teachers are all so passionate about zouk and dive deep into technique in helpful fun ways. I also love that they have a free practica after class so you can immediately practice what you learn in class with other students.
