Mambo is the fast, brassy Cuban big-band style that gave New York salsa its On-2 timing — danced on the second beat, sharp and musical, with roots in the Palladium era. In most US cities mambo and On-2 salsa are taught and danced together; a dedicated mambo night is rare, but the timing and the spirit live inside every strong On-2 room.
Mambo is best approached through an On-2 salsa lesson — the break-on-2 timing is the whole point and a teacher gets you there fastest. It feels harder than On-1 at first; stick with it a few weeks and the musicality clicks.
